Industry organisation the South African Farmers Development Association (Safda) has been recognised as a member of the sugar industry after the Sugar Act transitional regulations governing the South African sugar industry were made permanent following their publishing in a Government Gazette.

The transitional regulations were introduced in 2018 and extended in 2020 to expire on March 31, 2024.

The organisation thanked the leadership and executives of the sugar industry for their invaluable contributions to the technical process and proactively embracing change.

Their expertise and cooperation have been vital in facilitating a smooth transition towards a more sustainable and inclusive industry, the association said.

Further, the Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry and Competition provided guidance and collaboration in shaping the transformational regulatory framework that will govern the industry moving forward, Safda said.

"This gazette represents the beginning of our efforts to advance transformation within the sector comprehensively. We remain committed to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to address remaining challenges and drive meaningful progress in the years ahead."

Safda aims to work with all industry partners and stakeholders in building the sugar industry of the future underpinned by diversification, transformation, competitiveness and sustainability.

"We are confident that the sugar sector will continue to champion and secure sustainable livelihoods for thousands of sugarcane farmers while ensuring the stability of all businesses in the value chain," Safda executive chairperson Dr Siyabonga Madlala said.
